The Spring Outside the Fence tells the story of Li Lin and Wu Ai-hua, best friends who grow up in a military dependents' village. Their lives take a turn when both fall in love with their childhood friend, pilot He Kang, who tragically dies in a crash. This event propels them into a new life in Taipei, where they work as a hostess and accountant, supporting American soldiers on leave from Vietnam.

Amidst their struggles, the girls meet Michael, an American flight instructor, who pursues Li Lin. However, she is unable to move past her feelings for He Kang and rejects his advances. The film delves into the complexities of their friendship and the impact of their shared past as they ultimately return to their childhood village, reflecting on their experiences and memories together.
