The Super (1985) dives into a gritty Bronx tenement, where the main character, Scuggs, isn’t exactly a pleasant sort. The atmosphere is thick with tension, and the pacing feels deliberate, almost suffocating at times, echoing the claustrophobia of urban living. This film has a raw edge, mixing crime and drama, and it’s fascinating to see how it builds off Will Eisner's graphic novel, giving life to larger-than-life characters. That 11-year-old girl is a real piece of work, manipulating everyone around her, which makes for some unsettling dynamics. You get a sense of moral ambiguity throughout, and the performances are gripping, particularly Scuggs’s descent into desperation. It’s a unique blend of melodrama and realism, capturing a snapshot of a time and place.
