The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning feels like a grim prequel, setting the stage for Leatherface's origins with a gritty atmosphere. It's got that raw intensity you'd expect from a horror flick, plus some genuinely brutal practical effects that stand out amidst the CGI-heavy landscape of mid-2000s horror. The pacing is relentless, ramping up tension in a way that mirrors the chaotic road trip vibe. The performances, especially from the lead, are solid enough to ground the horror in something relatable, even as chaos unfolds. It's a harsh look at survival and the cost of violence, adding layers you might not expect from a slasher. Not the best in the franchise, but it has its moments for sure.
