The Uckfield Thumper

This documentary focuses on the distinctive sound of Thumper trains, which have a single onboard diesel engine. It features audio recorded from both trackside and onboard, preserving the unique auditory experience of these trains. The film serves as a tribute to the Thumpers following their retirement from service.

In addition to the trains, the Uckfield branch itself is highlighted. Once part of a larger route connecting Tunbridge Wells to Lewes, the branch has an interesting history, including both single and double track sections. The film also addresses the safety measures implemented after the tragic head-on collision at Cowden in 1994, which led to new operational protocols on the railway.
