The van Paemel Family

This film tells the story of the Van Paemel family, focusing on their patriarch, a farmer working on baron de Wilde's estate. The narrative unfolds as Désire, the mild-mannered son, is accidentally shot during a hunting accident, leading to significant family challenges. Eduard, the eldest son, becomes involved in the socialist movement, while his sister Cordule defies their father by engaging in an affair with a poacher.

As the family faces eviction due to their inability to pay rent and dwindling labor, each member's fate diverges. Kamiel is drafted into the army, adding to the family's woes. The story culminates in a poignant examination of loss and survival, with three children emigrating to the USA, one becoming a nun, and one passing away, leaving only the farmer and his wife.
