The Writer tells the story of Kostas, a Lithuanian-American, and Dima, a Russian-Lithuanian, who reconnect in New York after decades apart. Their relationship began in the 1980s when they served together in the Soviet army. As Lithuania gained independence in the 1990s, their paths diverged when Kostas moved to New York to pursue his writing career while Dima remained behind.

Years later, Kostas has published a book inspired by their separation, prompting Dima to visit him in New York. Dima is eager to address the truths and inaccuracies in Kostas's narrative. The film delves into the complexities of their gay relationship and the broader implications of their shared history, making it a poignant exploration of love and memory.
