To the Desert has this gritty, raw energy that pulls you in from the start. Julia, who’s just trying to make ends meet as a waitress, finds herself entangled in this dark underbelly of the oil industry. The pacing is tense, almost suffocating at times, which really heightens the sense of dread as her seemingly innocuous meeting with Gwynfor spirals into chaos. What I find striking is how it captures the desolation of the landscape – the stark deserts are almost characters themselves. The performances are solid, especially from the leads, who really embody the desperation of their situations. It’s a film that lingers with you, leaving a lasting impression of the moral complexities involved. Not your typical crime thriller for sure.
