The story follows Friedrich, an unruly student and son of a Prussian general, whose numerous romantic entanglements lead to both enemies and duels. Recruited by Frederic II the Great, he becomes part of the king's personal bodyguard while training under the strict Graf von Jaschinsky. Friedrich's complicated love life unfolds as he falls for Amalia, the king's sister, who resists being married to the heir of the Swedish throne.
