The narrative follows Jacob's Trading House, a firm profiting from cocaine smuggling while simultaneously exploiting the unemployed by leasing them land. This creates a harsh reality for the settlers, who find themselves in a cycle of servitude.

At the center of the story is the manager of the firm, who marries a girl he seduces from one of the colonists, a former homeless man. This relationship becomes a source of suffering as the girl longs for her former life. Her father, desperate to protect her, confronts Jacob, leading to escalating tensions.

As the colonists become increasingly disillusioned with their situation, they band together to fight against the corrupt businessmen, culminating in a powerful climax that highlights their struggle for dignity and justice.
