The story revolves around Alma Krause, who proudly owns a thoroughbred French bulldog along with various other pets in her apartment. As a veterinarian's widow, she nurtures both her animal friends and her nephew Heinz, who seems indifferent to following in his uncle's footsteps. Instead of pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, Heinz appears reluctant to take on the responsibilities that come with it.

Alma is determined to steer Heinz away from a future that lacks ambition. Her actions are driven by a desire to protect him from a mundane life as a small animal practice owner, which she believes is not fitting for him.
