The story follows librarian Géza Kriston, who is fired after two decades of service. Rather than leaving, he stands his ground against those demolishing the library, leading to a confrontation with authorities and ultimately finding himself in police custody.

During his time in custody, Géza encounters Sándor Tököli, a Roma pickpocket who recognizes the value of the severance pay in the librarian's possession. This interaction sets the stage for a dramatic and comedic exploration of their contrasting lives.
