Wolf Call, directed by George Waggner in '39, is this interesting blend of adventure and romance. The film captures a certain rawness; it’s got that gritty mining backdrop that contrasts sharply with the glamor of New York. The pacing feels a bit uneven at times, but it kind of adds to the charm. The playboy protagonist, sent off to learn some life lessons, really grows on you. The performances are solid, especially when the character interacts with the rugged locals. There’s a sense of discovery and introspection that weaves through the narrative, which is pretty different from a lot of films of its era. Plus, the practical effects used in the mining scenes lend a tangible authenticity that’s worth noting.
